Myofascial Integration:
Myofascial Integration is a powerful massage modality that creates postural change in your body. It increases range of motion and alleviates painful conditions affiliated with daily living and external stress. While it is not the only solution in relieving pain, it is an integral piece of the puzzle when making a healthy life change.
Myofascial Integration Massage helps:
In addition to immediate relief, myofacial massage can provide long lasting results by loosening the layers of tight tissue deep below the skin. The effect will enable you to do more activities with less pain.
Structural Integration:
Structural Integration is a modality that realigns the structure of the body through movement and massage. Structural Integration (SI) considers gravity, physical structure, and individual habits (such as work-related posture and physical activities) to bring a person into his/her optimal vertical alignment.
SI allows the body to become more balanced and better able to move with ease. Chronic pain and discomfort are often alleviated and replaced with a feeling of fluidity and lightness. Old patterns of poor posture are often eliminated.
Benefits:
Myofascial Integration Structural Therapy (MIST)
The combination of Myofacial Integration and Structural Integration is called MIST. Unlike swedish or relaxation massage, MIST focuses not only on muscles but on their protective layer called fascia (also known as connective tissue). Muscles are contracting tissues that give the body and organs physical movement. The fascia is what surrounds the muscles, bones and organs in the body. The fascia gives muscles their shape and the body its structure.
MIST aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning the fascia. As fascia is lengthened it allows the muscles to move more efficiently. The practitioner will apply pressure to the body, working the fascia in a systematic way. When restricted fascia is released and lengthened the body can return to its structurally optimal position.
The constant pull of gravity, the stress of daily activities and physical injuries can pull the body out of alignment. The fascia gradually shortens, tightens and adjusts to accommodate the misalignment. When the body is out of alignment it creates inefficiency and imbalance resulting in stiffness, discomfort and loss of energy. When a body is aligned and balanced it moves with greater ease. It requires less energy to function. Good posture is effortless and breathing is easier. The body becomes more flexible, more coordinated and performance improves.
What will I experience in a MIST session?
The practitioner will observe the client focusing mainly on how they stand, walk and other general movements. The specific goals of the session will be discussed. The client will participate in the session often being asked to breathe while an area is being worked on or to make small, specific movements to aid in loosening tight tissue.
During the session the client may feel the tissue warming then relaxing in the area that the practitioner is working. Some individuals do experience momentary discomfort as the practioner opens up and frees areas that are more restricted. Appropriate pressure will be applied based on the clients needs and comfort level. During the sessions the practioner will help the client to become aware of habitual patterns of movement and imbalances in their body and will explain what changes would be helpful in eliminating these patterns in their daily life.
What are the benefits?
It is important to remember that because no two people are alike, the experiences and the benefits will never be exactly the same. Many people report feeling taller and slimmer. Feelings of pain and discomfort are often said to be alleviated. Others often experience greater flexibility, a feeling of lightness and fluidity, better balance, increased breathing capacity, increased energy and greater self-confidence.
